Are You Using Glycolic Acid? Here’s Why You Should

Over the years, we’ve seen many skincare trends come and go. From slugging to the 10-step routine, there has been no shortage of new and now methods to try. While it can be fun to give these trends a go, we tend to return to our tried and true skincare favourites.

For us, that means regular exfoliation. Exfoliation gives skin an undeniable glow while helping to reduce texture and dullness. Today, we’re going to explore one of our go-to exfoliators: glycolic acid.

What Is Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic acid is a type of chemical exfoliator known as an alpha-hydroxy acid. It is derived from sugar cane – making it naturally sourced.

Glycolic acid works by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be removed from the skin’s surface. This removal of dead skin cells is what gives you that undeniable glow and fresh-faced appearance.

The Benefits of Glycolic Acid

As we mentioned above, glycolic acid is frequently used to boost radiance and overall glow. But that’s not all! In addition to increasing skin luminosity, glycolic acid has also been known to help with:

● refining skin texture
● smoothing the appearance of enlarged pores
● brightening and promoting even-looking skin
● diminishing the look of fine lines and wrinkles
● fading hyperpigmentation
● preventing breakouts

Glycolic acid can be especially effective for acne-prone skin as it helps to break up dead skin cells, excess oil, and dirt in the pores, removing congestion and leading to clearer skin.

On a deeper level, glycolic acid has been known to stimulate collagen synthesis – slowing down the appearance of skin aging and improving overall skin texture.

Glycolic Acid In Your Routine

Now that you know about the benefits, how do you incorporate glycolic acid into your routine?

As with any exfoliator, it’s important to start low and go slow. Many skin types, especially sensitive skin, can experience side effects ranging from slight redness to skin tingling when they begin using glycolic acid. These are typically mild and go away with continued use.
