Wyld Skincare is a personal care brand that is guilt-free, cruelty-free and made with all natural ingredients with gorgeous packaging that doesn’t pollute the Earth or harm animals.
Truth Beauty connected with Joy Yap, the founder of Wyld Skincare to find out the story behind the brand.
Growing up, Joy had a rare skin condition called ichthyosis, which resulted in extremely dry and flakey skin. Because of this, Joy was very self-conscious about her skin and became obsessed with learning about how the skin works and finding solutions to soothe her dry, irritated skin. Joy says “I tried every brand of skincare available on the market, but many would burn and itch my skin, or do nothing”. As Joy was looking for a solution for herself she realized her passion for natural, clean skincare.
Joy further explains that before starting Wyld, she was in the technology world for more than a decade, but was then laid off from her consultancy role for BlackBerry. “While I was living in my friend’s living room, I started Wyld, and on the side, I was hustling for clients and doing marketing and branding consulting” says Joy.
Joy’s first product was the OG Konjac Sponge infused with Charcoal. Joy states “When I first discovered the konjac sponge, it was like a light switched on within me. This is it. I knew it, I felt it in my gut, and without anything to lose, I went for it. I knew it was a unique and innovative product, and as a biodegradable product, it perfectly aligned with my values of sustainability and most importantly, it works and delivers exceptional results”. Wyld then grew quickly, and within six months, Joy quit her consulting gigs and focused on building Wyld full time. From there Joy had built out an entire product line. Joy teases “we have a lot of exciting product announcements for the remainder of 2020, but that’s all I can say for now”.
So what does “Wyld” Skincare stand for?
Joy explained that Wyld stands for “What You Love doing”, and being a Wyld one means you’re uniquely you. Joy says “Wyld is fearlessly charting your own course in life and relentlessly pursuing what sets your soul on fire”.
Wyld skin care strives to always be game changing, innovative and different. The products are unique, not only because they come from a desire to change the skincare game, but to also use innovative ingredients. Joy states that she believes that any results that a synthetic ingredient can achieve, mother nature can do better.
Wyld Skincare is known for the world’s best-selling konjac sponges which are made from konjac root, a vitamin-rich plant, grown in the foothills and mountains of Asia. Konjac roots easily absorb water to form the perfect sponge texture for gentle exfoliation. Joy explains how not all konjac sponges are made equal. She says “Ours truly work, leaving the skin feeling baby soft and smooth as it is infused with Charcoal-perfect for drawing out impurities and excess oil, and French Pink Clay-which nourishes the skin”. You can use the Konjac Sponge with Wyld’s Seas the Day Cleanser or without a cleanser, to gently exfoliate and nourish your skin. Joy adds “After use, your skin will be bright, healthy and flake free and as a bonus, these sponges are compostable so they go back into the earth, right where they came from”.
Joy continues and explains how she uses both sponges in her daily routine. “French Pink Clay in the morning, and Charcoal for the evening with Seas the Day Cleanser when I want a deeper cleanse” says Joy. Both the Charcoal and French Pink Clay sponges are gentle, so they’re suitable for all skin types. She says “I use my sponges, around 3-4 times per week, but how often you exfoliate differs from person to person, so I would suggest starting slow and listening to your skin”. Joy then state the importance on being loving and kind to your skin and taking the time for daily rituals.
Wyld also offers a bath soak, The Magnesium Bali Bath Soak, as the optimal way to replenish essential mineral that many of us are deficient in, through our skin. Magnesium Chloride is one of Joy’s favourite ingredients as it is truly mother nature’s gift. Joy says "this stuff, is potent and eases my sore muscles and period cramps”. Joy also explains how Wyld skincare only uses Organic glycerin, as regular (non-organic) glycerin (most likely) contains palm oil. Joy was born in Malaysia, where the palm oil industry is killing the endangered orangutans! Betaine is another amazing ingredient that is in the Seas the Day Gel cleanser and will make an appearance in many of Wyld’s future products. It is a humectant, extremely hydrating, lightweight and moisturizing. Last but certainty not least, Joy is totally obsessed with the Konjac plant ingredient as it is so simple, but it is magic for the skin.
Not only is Wyld an amazing skincare brand it is also an environmentally cautious brand that always looks at the bigger picture. Joy says “As a big lover of the ocean, through my passion for diving, I knew Wyld would be a mission driven company - one that would truly make a difference”.
Joy explains “as a skincare company, we are aware of the damage this industry has on the environment, specifically our oceans. Pretty soon, if we don’t take action now, we will be swimming in plastics rather than sea life". Joy continues “I love the ocean and sea life, and recognize the importance this ecosystem has on our planet”. Because of these environmental impacts, Joy believes that giving back and donating towards ocean conservation is something Wyld skincare has to do to enact change and inspire others to do the same. “We believe in progress over perfection, and are always looking for new ways to reduce waste and find alternative solutions as best as we can. We only use only biodegradable, and sustainably sourced ingredients in all of our products” Joy explains.
Joy states that “we can make a difference, put the planet over profits, while still keeping our products effective and affordable”.
Over all, Joy is super excited for Wyld Skincare’s future she says “I have huge aspirations for Wyld. I see Wyld evolving and growing into a wellness/self-love movement with a community of conscious, mindful empowered women who believe they can make a difference in the world.
