With the endless choices of foundations on the market, it can feel overwhelming to know which one is made for you. Each person’s skin has individual needs, so it’s understandable that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to foundation.
Whether your skin requires a foundation that adds moisture or one that helps to keep shine away, we’ll suggest a base that will make you feel balanced and confident. For how to find the perfect foundation for your skin type, follow these easy steps.
How Does Your Skin Feel?
First things first: which skin type do you have?
Many of us are still unsure of what our skin needs are, but there’s an easy way to determine which type you may have. If your skin feels:
- Tight, dry, and/or flaking, you may have dry skin.
- Neither oily nor dry, you may have normal skin.
- Shiny during the day, especially on your forehead, nose, and chin, you may have oily skin.
- Dry, normal, and oily in different areas of your face, you may have combination skin.

Choose The Right Foundation For You
Now that you’ve discovered which type of skin you have, it’s time to find a foundation that will complement your skin’s unique chemistry. Regardless of your skin type, it’s important to select a foundation that has good-for-you, high-quality ingredients that will improve your skin health with continued use.
Dry
Dry skin occurs when our sebaceous glands are underactive and not producing enough oil; it can sometimes feel tight and uncomfortable. In addition to using a rich moisturizer every day, you’ll want a foundation that is going to add hydration back into the skin.
For dry skin, we love to use the Kosas Tinted Face Oil. This lightweight, nourishing foundation offers ingredients like Avocado Oil and Meadowfoam Oil that plump and moisturize the skin while adding a light layer of coverage.
Normal/Combination
If you have a normal or combination skin type, your skin may require different levels of hydration in different areas. You may find yourself multi-masking or changing up your moisturizers throughout the year based on skin needs.
Normal and combination skin types are the most flexible with which types of foundations they can use. A great place to start is with the Sappho New Paradigm CC Cream. This light-diffusing foundation locks in lightweight hydration with Aloe Vera while Pineapple Extract provides brightening Vitamin C and essential antioxidants.
Oily or Acne-Prone
Oily and acne-prone skin often occurs when our sebaceous glands are overactive and are producing more oil than necessary. This can result in excess oil, enlarged pores, blackheads, and blemishes.
For oily and acne-prone skin, try using a powder compact like Elate’s Pressed Foundation. The Bamboo Extract in this pressed foundation works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and soothe inflammation due to acne. Jojoba Oil calms down excess oil production and helps your skin find balance. This bamboo compact is perfect for on-the-go touch-ups and a quick pat of the powder removes shine in an instant.
